  Sometimes being a polite employee means leaving people be at 10 p.m. after they come by for a few items and have had a long work day. If it's crystal clear that a person isn't in the mood and doesn't want to chit-chat, insisting on standing next to them and going on and on about being hungry for Subway is not friendly or polite, it's extremely passive-aggressive and obnoxious. FYI. I pray you are shown the same "courtesy" sometime.
